Beijing’s newly-appointed head of its Hong Kong liaison office said on Monday that China strongly supports the special administrative region and that it is hoped the territory will return to “the right path”.
In his first comments to the media since Saturday’s announcement of his appointment to the key post in Hong Kong, Luo Huining said he is “not unfamiliar with the city”, Reuters reports.
“Hong Kong compatriots have made important contributions to the reform and opening up and modernization of our country. The motherland will always be Hong Kong’s strongest backer,” Luo was quoted as saying.
“In the past half a year, the Hong Kong situation has been worrying. Everyone eagerly hopes Hong Kong can return to the right path,” he told media personnel, according to the report.
Luo is replacing?Wang Zhimin as the chief of Beijing’s representative office in Hong Kong, which has been wracked by months of anti-government protests triggered by a now-withdrawn extradition bill.
The “one country, two systems” arrangement is Hong Kong’s greatest advantage, Luo said, adding that the basic law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, will be “fully implemented.”?
Until November, Luo was the top Communist Party official in China’s northern Shanxi province, where he had been tasked with cleaning up a graft-ridden, coal-rich region.
Before moving to Shanxi, Luo had been the top party official in the western province of Qinghai.
